Online department stores often promise that your package will be delivered the same day. From now on there is a parcel delivery person who delivers on that promise in a sustainable way. On 1 May 2016, Fietskoeriers.nl, a collective of bicycle courier companies from 27 cities in the Netherlands, is launching a nationwide network for same day delivery.
The bicycle courier is the solution for parcel delivery in the city. “A unique service for shops and webshops,” says Marieke Snoek, director of Fietskoeriers.nl. “We collect and deliver all packages by bicycle. We do the collection in the afternoon, so we can deliver the packages the same evening. Everywhere in the Netherlands.”
The logistic bottleneck that the “same day delivery” promise brings with it is visible through the strong growth of parcel delivery buses in the city. Fietskoeriers.nl solves this by using the bicycle in the city and working with hubs that are conveniently located on the outskirts of the city: “Parcel vans can quickly deliver and pick up packages there. The bicycle courier ensures a fast bicycle connection between the hub and the rest of the city. This way we ensure smarter and, in particular, more sustainable logistics in the city,” says Snoek.
A collaboration with parcel deliverer ‘Red Je Pakketje’ ensures that the network is nationwide: “Without Red Je Pakketje all bicycle courier cities would be separate islands. The cooperation ensures that our cities are connected. In addition, Red Je Pakketje takes care of the delivery of our packages outside the city, just as we take care of the delivery of their packages within the city. ”, Explains Snoek.
Same day delivery in the Netherlands is rapidly emerging. Snoek is self-confident: “We, bicycle couriers, have been the experts on the first and last mile for years and know better than anyone what is involved in getting a package to their destination quickly in the city. We show that parcel delivery can also be done differently and that many more logistical problems in the city can be solved by bicycle.”
