Open Dutch Cycle Messenger Championships return to Utrecht

On Sunday 20 September 2026, cycle messengers from the Netherlands and beyond will gather at Lage Weide in Utrecht for the Open Dutch Cycle Messenger Championships (ODMC). Ten years after Utrecht last hosted the event, the championship returns with a demanding course featuring steep climbs, off-road sections and the fast-paced challenges that define cycle messenger racing.

The event will take place just across the yellow bridge behind the Douwe Egberts factory. The industrial setting of Lage Weide, to the north west of the city centre, provides a distinctive backdrop for a day of competition, community and cycling culture.

A race built around real messenger skills

During the main race, competitors navigate the closed course while completing deliveries and collecting assignments at checkpoints. Speed alone is not enough: riders must plan efficient routes, handle consignments carefully and make smart decisions under pressure. Visitors are encouraged to watch the main race and enjoy the atmosphere around the course.

Kicking off with an alleycat race on the Saturday evening, the main programme resumes on the Sunday morning with a kids race, followed in the afternoon by the main racing which will decide which riders will end up on the podium.

European champion Chris Saris joins the field

The reigning European cycle messenger champion, Chris Saris of Fietskoeriers Zutphen, has confirmed that he will take part. His participation adds further excitement to a strong field competing for the Dutch titles.

Organised by the reigning Dutch champions

De Fietskoerier Utrecht is organising this year’s championship after riders from the company won both the men’s and women’s Dutch titles last year. The organisation is supported by a broad network of volunteers, partners and businesses from Utrecht and Lage Weide.

The International Cargo Bike Festival, which also takes place in Utrecht the following month, are proud to partner with the ODMC organisation to support the 2026 edition.
