Cycle logistics explodes in Belgium: +70% more parcels delivered in 2024 according to BCLF Barometer 2025

The Belgian Cycle Logistics Federation (BCLF) published its Barometer 2025 report today. The publication coincides with the third edition of the Route33 event, which took place in Brussels and was attended by the Belgian Federal Minister for Mobility, Climate and Ecological Transition, Jean-Luc Crucke, as well as numerous representatives from the cycle logistics sector.
The 71-page Barometer 2025 report highlights the spectacular growth of cycle logistics in Belgium: a sector that is positioning itself as one of the pillars of the transition to more sustainable, efficient and resilient logistics.
In 2024, 76.08% of Belgians purchased goods online (compared to the European average of 71.76%). In Brussels, motorists spent 118 hours stuck in traffic jams, making the city one of the three most congested cities in Europe. With limited urban space, cities need to find solutions to relieve congestion in their centres while meeting the growing demand for deliveries.
In this context, cycle logistics is emerging as a strategic solution: it enables fast, efficient and sustainable deliveries while reducing congestion and environmental impact.
2024: a year of record growth for bicycle logistics
In 2024, the sector will continue its strong growth:
- 5.2 million parcels delivered in 2024, compared to 3 million in 2023 – an increase of +70% in one year.
- 6,200 jobs in cycle logistics (excluding the platform economy).
- 10,700,000 km travelled by bicycle, +30% compared to 2023.
The figures show that the sector is becoming increasingly professional and that cargo bikes are widely used by last mile operators.
Brussels remains the region with the most bicycle deliveries in Belgium, accounting for 57% of the national total, followed by Flanders (37%) and Wallonia (6%).
What does the 2025 Barometer reveal?
This new edition analyses:
- The context of the last mile, the challenges and impact,
- The evolution of cycle logistics in Belgium and the actors involved,
- Materials, equipment and regulations,
- Recommendations for the development of the sector.
The last mile, short in distance but heavy in impact, combines complex logistics, social challenges, economic pressures and major environmental challenges.
Bicycle logistics: a practical tool for urban logistics
Cargo bikes are proving their worth as an efficient solution in cities: faster, more flexible, quieter, environmentally friendly and perfectly suited to urban density.
Specialist operators and mixed transport companies are integrating cargo bikes into their logistics strategies, recognising their performance and compatability with delivery vans and/or electric vehicles. Although cycle logistics already accounts for a growing share of urban distribution, its potential remains largely untapped.
Statements
Jean-Luc Crucke, Minister of Mobility, Climate and Ecological Transition, states:
“As Federal Minister for Mobility and Climate, I fully support the development of cycle logistics. This sector accelerates the decarbonisation of our mobility and has a positive impact on the economy. Cycle logistics embodies ‘econology’, as it combines ecological efficiency and economic dynamism in an urban context.”
“In 2026, the second action plan for the promotion of cycling will support the development of cycle logistics. The increase in the number of deliveries of goods and services by bicycle will inevitably require measures to strengthen the sector’s competitiveness in order to achieve the ambitious objectives of Route33.”
Philippe Van de Casteele, General Manager of the BCLF, underlines:
“Cycle logistics today fulfils a clear operational need: to make urban deliveries more efficient, as evidenced by the continued increase in parcels delivered by cargo bikes.”
“Transport decarbonisation targets will radically change the last mile, with cycle logistics playing a crucial role. It is therefore essential that the sector is recognised as a key player in the urban logistics of tomorrow, so that it can contribute its full potential to more efficient, more humane and more sustainable cities.”
